Skippy

Its coming up to my year anniversary in Australia and other than the zoo this sign is about as close as I have got to seeing a Kangaroo. Even though they are apparently everywhere I have had no luck.

But yesterday I got to see Skippy finally and the didn't disappoint. Keen to get some fresh air we went on the Bushranger's trail along the coast down on the Mornington Peninsula. The walk is a 11km round trip starting at Bushranger's bay and ending up at Cape Schanck lighthouse.

The sea is pretty wet and wild along this bit of coast. The Australian PM Harold Holt went swimming off the coast in 1967. He disappeared when swimming and his body was never found.

The walk took us a couple of hours an apart from Joe being attacked and bitten by inch long black ants (everything over here wants to kill you!), everything was pretty uneventful.... until we spotted these guys, they were so close and didn't seem concerned about us at all. I finally got to see my kangaroos :)

You can just see the Joey's feet sticking out of his mum's pouch he was so big he could only fit in head first.

I think I may have to go visit them again soon, so long as I can convince Joe there will be no more killer ants!

Fush and chups

It has been the most beautiful day in Melbourne. Though I spent most of it chained to my desk. It was such a lovely warm evening we decided to go grab some fush and chups (kiwi for fish and chips!)

There is an amazing place on Bay Street in Port Melbourne called Hunky Dory.

The fish is so tasty and the chips and crunchy and not greasy. The place is always packed.

Food was great for the soul as was my glass of wine. We follows it up with a lovely walk and seeing our local possums.

Olives

It is Anzac day in Melbourne and it is starting to feel Autumnal, although we have had gorgeous sunshine today.

We have two lovely olive trees in our garden, and I decided that I really should try and do something with the olives.

So using my day off, I decided to dabble in curing my own olives. I have no idea how it is going to turn out but I am going to give it a go.

After looking at lots of different curing methods, I settled on something that looked the simplest.

I love black olives, so I picked the olives on the trees that were starting to ripen. Olives can be stored in any jar that you would use for preserves.

I sterilised a couple of jars by boiling them.

Whilst the jars were sterilising, I cut a slit each side of each olive down to the stone.

Once all the olives were ready I added them to the jar and then covered in a mixture of rock salt and tap water. About 50g of salt to 500ml of water. I then weighted down the olives to ensure they stay under the brine using a plastic bag filled with a little water.

The salt helps remove the bitterness from the olives and darkens them. I have read that I now need to replace the liquid around the olives every week to 10 days for four weeks. Following this you can create a nice marinade for them using olive oil, pepper corns, lemons and bay leaves.

They look pretty next to my preserved limes, which are going down a treat in our curries and with couscous.

I will keep you posted on the olives.

I Want To Be A Cowboy

Happy belated Easter. I hope you had a lovely weekend and ate lots of chocolate.

We booked a weekend out of Melbourne to enjoy some country air. We went to Daylesford in the cool country a couple of hours outside of Melbourne. Daylesford is an old mining town and is know for its natural mineral springs - more of this in my next blog.

Keen to get the most of the outdoors I booked a two hour ride at Hepburn Lagoon Trail Rides for Joe and I. Joe has never ridden before but was keen to give it a try, after looking a little nervous to begin with - he soon relaxed with his lovely steed Winston.

I rode the lovely Boo Hoo using a couple of leading reins - bit sore on the hands!

We had a couple of great hours riding in the bush, seeings Koalas. Joe loved it and even had a go at a canter.

I wanted to take home Boo Hoo home!

The riding school was on a homestead farm. The farmer's lovely wife Sue bought us piles of cheese on toast to eat after the ride, before we headed back to our cottage... for just a little nap.

More of our adventures to come tomorrow :)

Walk On The Wild Side

Melbourne weather is crazy, when I moved here I was told it was a city of four seasons in a day, now I understand why. Anyone watching the Grand Prix this weekend will have seen it has been cold, wet and windy with spells of glorious sunshine this weekend, pretty insane as it was about 37 degrees earlier in the week.

Joe and I took advantage of it being a bit cooler and decided that whilst beach time may be coming to an end we were keen to get walking and exploring the Aussie country side a bit more.

This weekend we went walking in the You Yangs. There are a set of hills about 50k outside of Melbourne. The name "You Yang" comes from the Aboriginal word Wurdi Youange meaning big mountain in the middle of a plain.

It was really nice to get out of the city and do some exploring. The scenery was beautiful and although cold wet and rainy, we felt we justified our lazy Saturday night in with a bottle of red wine at the end of the day.

Beach Bums

Wow it is hot in Melbourne right now, its been over 30 degrees for the last 8 days and peaked at 37 today. This is weather we may get in the peak of summer but we are supposed to be in autumn now.

Determined that we enjoy this weather while it lasts, we have spent the long weekend mainly on the beach. We have well and truly become beach bums

My lovely friend Prit has been over to visit from the UK so we ventured down to Half Moon Bay for some sun and sand.

We were very pleased to cool off in the water.

We felt there was no better way to finish Prit's time in Melbourne that have a good old aussie barbie in the garden with good food and friends.

Best long weekend ever, apart from the fact it is 9pm, 33 degrees and I think I am melting. Time for a late night dip I think!

Who doesn't like a street party?!

This weekend provided some mighty fine weather again, after lounging on the beach on Saturday and having a great night out in the city. We decided we should venture away from the seaside and head to Sydney road in Brunswick for their yearly street party.

It was an afternoon of song, dance, street food, sunshine and market stalls. Perfect.

Never one to shy away of having something to eat Joe and I tucked in to Turkish spinach and cheese pastries calls Gozleme, and a good old Aussie sausage sizzle.

We enjoyed some funky drum music and the cute market stalls.

A perfect Saturday afternoon getting lost in Melbourne :)
